Selecting the right number of roofing nails per square
- by siteadmin
Roofing nails form an integral part of roof installation. They secure the shingles and keep them from blowing. The number of nail can vary depending upon the size and type of shingle. You should also consider the structure of the building, the foundation and the framing as well as how much weight the roof will add.
How to Choose the Right Roofing Nailing
Most common roofing nails consist of galvanized, stainless or aluminum steel. The metal that a roofing nail is made of can make a significant difference in its longevity and ability to hold down the shingles. The shape and size of the nail also have an impact on how they are used.
The length of the roofing nails varies depending on how thick the sheathing is and the size of shingles. Installing thicker shingles will require longer nails, while installing thinner shingles will require shorter nails.
A roof installation is incomplete without knowing the right number of roofing nails for each square. It's easy to calculate the number of nails needed.
Measuring the length and the width of your roofing is a great way to find out how many nails you need. If your roof measures 24 inches by 36 inches, you will require 33 nails. This figure is used to calculate your roof's total square footage and how many bundles shingles you will require.
To determine how many roofing nail you need, measure the pitch on your roof. Sloped roofs usually require more nails. If your roof slopes at 50 degrees or above, you'll need 4 nails.
No matter how steep the slope is, you should always install enough roofing nail for each layer. You'll need 6 nails for each layer of asphalt shingles if you plan to use three tab shingles.
The nails you need per layer will be 10 if you are using architectural shingles. These shingles will cover more surface area than 3 tab shingles.
How to Calculate how many roofing nails You will Need
The number you need of roofing nails depends on both the type and size shingles, as well your roof's pitch. The general rule is to use no less than four nails per three-tab standard shingles.
A box with 3-1/4 inches of roofing nails will provide coverage for approximately 225 sq. feet.
Roofing nails can be made from a wide range of materials including copper, aluminum, and galvanized iron. Most contractors will use the more expensive types. However, you can find cheaper versions that are durable and strong.
